Tonight I watched the Iron Chef super battle. We have had this recorded forever. This episode focused on using fresh foods from the garden. The chefs were privileged enough to choose from the White House garden.
Apparently the White House has grown a massive garden in an effort to encourage local children to eat healthy and fresh. This reminded me that I had wanted to look into eating fresher and healthier.
About a year ago I was reading an article that talked about using local farm shares. A farm share is where you spend $ to receive a basket full of the farm’s local goodies each week. You make a commitment to this at the beginning of the season. What you get each week varies depending on the harvest.
This sounded so cool to me, of course though, I promptly forgot all about it.
Then a few months later, friends of mine in PA had signed up to be part of a farm share. It seemed really cool. Every week they would get a basket with fresh in season vegetables, meat, eggs and cheese.
I decided to do a little research on this. I mean, I do live in a state with a bunch of farms.
There happens to be a farm share right in our town. Suuuweeet! Sort of.
This farm share includes only produce and occasionally eggs. A full share is $600 for 22 weeks of produce.  (Expensive…thank you CT) You can do half shares, but you have to have someone to split it with. Pickups are on Tuesdays or Fridays.
Ok so here are the pros and cons of this plan

Pros
Cons
Fresh healthy vegetables every week. The vegetables could go to waste (due to my extreme laziness)
Variety of meals, having to learn to cook out of my norm Having to cook (also a pro)
No need to worry about finding specific vegetables for a week You can’t predict what you will get, and I might not like some of it.
Lots of produce Could be too much/would have to find someone to split the share with.
Supporting the local farms The cost of supporting the local farm

I’m sure there will be more to come on this decision. D said he was on board, could be good for our family, help us to finally lose weight and teach good habits to Little G. Hmm…

Do you use a farm share, or know anyone who does? What do you think of them? Are they worth it, etc etc?
